In 2022, Gladden was investigated for obstruction of justice regarding a case against his son. Both WBTV and WFAE detailed the charges, which were regarded at the time by the Mecklenburg County District Attorney as having "the appearance of nepotism and undue political influence." He was ultimately not charged. He is a registered Republican and endorsed by MeckGOP.
