About the Primary Election
What is a primary? What is this primary?
Primaries are “run offs” before the general election where voters select who they want from their party to represent them in the general election. Registered Democrats can only vote in the Democratic primary; registered Republicans can only vote in the Republican primary; unaffiliated voters can choose which primary to vote in.
This primary is for a municipal election. The two offices on the ballot are Charlotte Mayor and Charlotte City Council.
How do I know if I am registered to vote?
You can check if you are a registered voter and see your primary ballot at the NC Voter Lookup site.
What if I missed the voter registration deadline?
Eligible citizens can still register to vote during early voting. Details on requirements to register during early voting are available on the North Carolina Board of Elections site.
When does voting start and end?
We've put together a timeline of all key dates for this year's primary and general elections. Check it out HERE.
What races are on the ballot?
This entirely depends on what district you live in. The city council members for districts 2 and 7 have no challenger so they won’t appear in the primary at all. A map of the Charlotte City Council districts are available here. Here are all the races included in the primary:
Charlotte City Council - At Large
Charlotte City Council - District 1
Charlotte City Council - District 3
Charlotte City Council - District 4
Charlotte City Council - District 5
Charlotte City Council - District 6
