District Attorney District 26
The district attorney is the state’s chief prosecutor in a judicial district. The district attorney’s office decides whether to prosecute criminal charges, prosecutes criminal cases, negotiates plea deals, presents cases to grand juries, works with law enforcement and crime victims and argues for appropriate penalties. The district attorney manages assistant district attorneys and office staff.
District attorneys must be licensed to practice law and live in the district they represent. They are elected to four-year terms.
Incumbent Democrat Spencer Merriweather is unopposed and is running for his third term.
