Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners District 5
According to the county website, “The Board's major responsibilities include adopting the annual County budget, setting the County property tax rate, and assessing and establishing priorities on the many community needs, especially those related to health, education, welfare, mental health and the environment.” The commissioners’ terms are two years.
There are nine seats on the board of commissioners: three elected at-large (countywide) and six elected by districts. All nine commissioners are Democrats, though there are sometimes disagreements.
Current Commissioner Laura Meier decided not to run for reelection after serving for six years. Newcomer and Democrat Charles DeLoach is unopposed in the general election.
