U.S. House of Representatives (NC-12) (Democratic Primary)
U.S. Representatives serve two-year terms representing approximately 750,000 residents of their congressional district. They vote on federal legislation, serve on committees, and advocate for district priorities. NC-12 includes most of Mecklenburg County. This is considered a heavily Democratic urban district.
Longtime incumbent Congresswoman Alma Adams is running for reelection and faces challenger Monaca Maye-Williamson.
The winner of this race faces the winner of the Republican primary in the 2026 fall general election. In the U.S. House, Republicans hold 218 seats and Democrats hold 213 seats (with some vacancies). Democrats need to gain a net of three districts to win a majority, while Republicans can lose no more than two districts to retain control.
The Cook Political Index estimates that this district leans Democrat by 24 percentage points.
