Description:
Balkcom was selected by the NC-11 GOP committee after incumbent Chuck Edwards withdrew his candidacy following an ethics investigation. Balkcom is a two-term state house member where she is chairperson of the Insurance Committee. She was the first primary sponsor of twelve bills in the most recent legislative session, including the “Back the Blue Pay Act.” She has advocated for parents’ rights, school choice and relief for Hurricane Helene. N.C. House Speaker Destin Hall called her “a principled conservative” after her selection. The Assembly NC’s political reporter wrote that she was registered as a Libertarian in 2002, then became a Democrat in 2005, then switched to the Republican party in 2016. Of the GOP party switch, Balkcom said, ““Like many Americans, the Democrat Party left me behind when they abandoned their values and embraced extremism.”
