Carver's website lists some of his main goals as better funding for public schools, elimination of vouchers, affordability for everyday expenses, a fairer tax system for working-class and retired citizens and protection of natural resources.

Carver was born and raised in Fayetteville. He is married, has one daughter and a granddaughter. He lost his mother in 1973 to breast cancer when he was a teenager. He then went to live with a classmate in a trailer and supported himself working at the local car wash. He worked for 25 years at Kelly-Springfield Tire Company before becoming a union leader. He later went to graduate school and became a history professor. He currently teaches at Gaston College. He attended Carolina Labor School at UNC Wilmington and graduate school at N.C. State after studying American labor history.
