Description:

McThenia was appointed to the district court role in 2008 by then-Gov. Mike Easley. At the time, he described her as "intellectual, thoughtful and able." McThenia was an assistant district attorney in Mecklenburg County for four years before being appointed to the judgeship. She was in private practice in North Carolina and Virginia before that. She has been unopposed in every election since her appointment.

Judge McThenia’s approach to judicial philosophy is defined by a commitment to overseeing thorough, well-organized proceedings. On appeal from one of her rulings, the North Carolina Court of Appeals has noted that she carefully considered large amounts of information and drafted highly-detailed findings of facts to support her ruling. A review of appellate decisions identified three cases in which McThenia's orders were at least partially reversed or vacated on appeal. McThenia’s judicial philosophy shows a commitment to ensuring that all procedures are properly followed and that equitable outcomes are achieved.
