Description:

Sawyer is running for her fifth term. She describes herself as a "Conservative Champion for Iredell County and north Mecklenburg." She sponsored bills to enhance the safety of youth camps and to prevent individuals from changing their sex on their birth certificates or driver's licenses after gender reassignment surgery. She is a chair of the Senate Transportation Committee and recently drafted legislation which could force Mecklenburg County to repay over $60MM for costs incurred in evaluating the I-77 South toll lane project unless the county reconsidered alternatives. Sawyer said on her podcast "We're Just Sayin" on June 12 that while Mecklenburg County represents 20% of her constituents, it is 100% of her problems. Sawyer was present for 627 or 701 votes in the most recent legislative session, placing her in the bottom half of senators for participation.

Sawyer was born in Davidson County and grew up in a trailer park. She graduated salutatorian of Parkland High School in Winston-Salem. She owns and operates an insurance agency with her husband. They have two daughters and live in Mooresville. She has a bachelor's degree from UNC Charlotte.
