N.C. House of Representatives 73 (Democratic Primary)

The Election Hub has partnered with The Chamber, Leading Business in Cabarrus to bring voters information about Cabarrus County candidates.

The N.C. House of Representatives is made up of 120 members of the General Assembly who are elected for two-year terms. The House has lawmaking powers, along with the N.C. Senate. Additionally, House members have the authority to tax, allocate funds, override a gubernatorial veto, provide state agency oversight and elect UNC Board of Governors members. They also conduct constituent services and have the sole power of impeachment. Candidates must be 21 years old to run for the House, and they must have been state residents for at least two years.

One of the candidates, Kim DeLaney passed away on January 26, 2026.  Her opponent Thomas Monks will face incumbent N.C. Rep. Republican Jonathan Almond in the 2026 fall general election. Almond is uncontested in the primary.

District 73 is a 71 square mile district primarily located in Cabarrus County. Since 2014, Cabarrus County has seen a 20% increase in population, to approximately 93,000. As of 2023, 28% of registered voters in Cabarrus County are registered as Democrats, 33% are registered as Republicans, and 37% are registered as independents (with the rest registered with third parties). The ethnic mix of District 73 is 51% White, 22% Black, 14% Hispanic, and 8% Asian.

Over the past 10 years, the district has undergone significant change with both intensive redistricting and explosive population growth. Since the 2023 State Supreme Court decision allowing partisan maps, District 73 was redrawn and centered on Concord and central Cabarrus County. The district flipped in 2024 from being a Democratic State House district to a Republican district.
