Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners District 2

According to the county website, “The Board's major responsibilities include adopting the annual County budget, setting the County property tax rate, and assessing and establishing priorities on the many community needs, especially those related to health, education, welfare, mental health and the environment.” 

There are nine seats on the board of commissioners: three elected at-large (countywide) and six elected by districts. All nine commissioners are Democrats, though there are sometimes disagreements. This commissioner's term is two years.

Longtime incumbent Vilma Leake was defeated in the March 2026 primary by Monifa (Mo) Drayton, former executive director of the Mecklenburg County Democratic Party, with 616 more votes. Drayton faces Republican Angela White Edwards.
