N.C. House of Representatives 106 (Democratic Primary)

The N.C. House of Representatives is made up of 120 members of the General Assembly who are elected for two-year terms. The House has lawmaking powers, along with the N.C. Senate. Additionally, House members have the authority to tax, allocate funds, override a gubernatorial veto, provide state agency oversight and elect UNC Board of Governors members. They also conduct constituent services and have the sole power of impeachment. Candidates must be 21 years old to run for the House, and they must have been state residents for at least two years.

The N.C. House of Representatives currently has 49 Democrats and 71 Republicans. To override a veto of any bill by the governor, three-fifths of both chambers must vote to override it.

District 106 is in the northeastern part of Mecklenburg County. It is a diverse district with over 60% of residents being Black, Hispanic, Asian or other non-white races. It is a wealthier district than the state average; median household income is $88,000 and 7% of residents are below the poverty line (compared to 13% of North Carolina overall).

The winner of the Democratic primary will have no opposition in November’s general election.
