U.S. House of Representatives (NC-4)

U.S. House District 4 is located in the Research Triangle region. It encompasses the entirety of both Durham County and Orange County and includes parts of northern Chatham County and eastern Wake County.

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives serve two-year terms. They must be at least 25 years old, a citizen of the U.S. for seven years and live in the state they represent. They cast votes on bills, serve on committees, draft laws and focus on policy issues that are of interest to themselves or their constituents. High-level tasks of the U.S. Congress including funding government programs and oversight of the executive branch.

The candidates in this race are incumbent Democrat Valerie Foushee, Republican Mahesh (Max) Ganorkar and Libertarian Guy Meilleur. This district leans heavily Democrat. According to the Cook Political Report, District 4 has an index of D+23, meaning the district leans significantly more Democratic than the national average. Foushee won a tight primary that received significant media attention. She won with 49.2% of the vote, while opponent Nida Allam received 48.2%. In that race, Foushee was criticized for accepting funds from the pro-Israel AIPAC lobby, and Allam, the first Muslim-American elected to office in North Carolina, was endorsed by Bernie Sanders.
