Description:

Meilleur's top priorities are greater educational opportunities, cost-effective healthcare, housing affordability, restorative justice and electoral reform. He aspires to expand open enrollment within and between public-school districts, abolish “laws creating a crime with no specific victim or property damage identified," enable independents to serve on the Board of Elections and replace "our plurality voting system with instant runoff voting: voters get to rank candidates in order of preference." According to a survey by INDY in 2022, Meilleur believes the most pressing issues are voting rights, protecting constitutional rights (specifically "our right to peacefully assemble") and economic freedom (specifically opposing "corporate cronyism").

Other personal:

Meilleur moved to North Carolina in 1985 to learn about trees at N.C. State, and he was a former staff arborist at UNC Chapel Hill. He has lived in Durham with his partner, Karen, since 2015. He says he has "lived, taught, and learned in 29 countries," and he said he has run marathons in 48 states, which made him "appreciate this land.”
