Description:

Murphy is a "firm supporter of the Second Amendment," wants to overhaul the healthcare system for veterans and is a "devout Christian" who is a "proud supporter of pro-life issues." He is also an advocate for physicians' voices and says he is "sickened by the unconscionable practices of health insurance companies that continually place profits above patient care." He has stated that he is dismayed by declining physician reimbursements and the consolidation of small medical practices by large hospital systems. He says rural and underserved communities are most affected. He serves as co-chair of the GOP Doctors Caucus. He introduced one bill in a recent session of Congress that was made into law: it provides increased flexibility on tax deadlines for citizens affected by federally-declared disasters.

Murphy is from Raleigh and lives in Greenville, N.C. He was valedictorian of Raleigh Broughton High School. He is married and a father. He worked as a medical missionary in several global regions including Africa, Central America and Asia, and recently underwent surgery for a benign brain tumor. He previously served as President of Eastern Urological Associates and chief of staff at Vidant Medical Center. He attended Davidson College, where he received a full scholarship. He has an MD from the UNC Chapel Hill and completed his urology and renal transplantation residency at the University of Kentucky.
