Description:
Leake is a longtime local politician and civil rights activist and the current incumbent in the District 2 seat. Over the years, her priorities have been public education, community advocacy and social action, support for small businesses and civic engagement at the county and national levels. Her record reflects long-standing involvement in education policy through service on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education, the CMS Policy Committee, and the NC Association of County Commissioners Public Education Steering Committee, as well as initiatives such as founding the Small Business Consortium Group and the African American Faith Alliance Group.

Leake is the oldest person to run for office in Mecklenburg County. Her biography on the county website says that she “became known” for leading a caravan of teachers to Raleigh to lobby for higher pay in 1989. According to her Mecklenburg County profile, a library in Nigeria is named for her. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Livingstone College, a master’s degree from the University of Buffalo in New York, completed her principalship certification at UNC Chapel Hill and has completed all coursework toward a doctorate at the University of San Francisco.
