City of Belmont Council Members

The Election Hub has partnered with the Gaston Business Association to bring voters information about Gaston County candidates.

Belmont has five city council members and a mayor. Two council members will be elected this year. All the roles serve four-year terms, and the top two vote-getters will be elected. The races are nonpartisan, which means that party affiliation is not listed on the ballot. Voters can select up to two candidates on their ballot.

Queen City News describes some of the issues that Belmont faces:  a three-year development moratorium for the fast-growing South Point corridor, looming widening on Interstate 85 and leaders confronted for not supporting the new Belmont Pride festival in June. Candidates also describe the importance of preserving the city’s “small town charm.” Belmont’s population is approximately 16,000 and the median household income is $86,000.

Forty percent of Belmont’s registered voters are unaffiliated, 37% are Republican and 23% are Democrat.
