Rankin does not appear to have an updated web presence but when he last ran in 2022, he said that his key areas of focus were “Quality Education, Equitable Resources, and Improved School Experiences.” In response to our candidate survey, he said that he would like to focus on “closing the gap of suspensions of minority students.”

Rankin has a bachelor’s degree from NC A&T and an MPA from UNC Pembroke. He has also served as the chair of the Education Committee for the Black Political Caucus. He is a registered Democrat and endorsed by MeckDems and LGBTQ Democrats of NC.

Why are you running for this role and why should voters pick you?  Please share any experience in an elected role that would be relevant to voters.

I am running for reelection so that we can continue building on the strong student performance gains we’ve achieved together. Over the past three years, I’ve been honored to serve on the CMS Board of Education, including two years as Vice Chair and Chair of the Policy Committee. In these roles, I have worked to strengthen policies that support academic excellence, equity, and student success, and I am committed to ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive.


What is one thing you would like to accomplish in the first six months if elected?

Closing the gap of suspensions of minority students


Tell us about 2-3 professional accomplishments you have achieved in your work experience (not limited to public service) that give voters a sense of your leadership style or skills.

I feel we have been successful in hiring the right Superintendent, developing strong goals, and policies that provide an environment conducive to improved student outcomes and experiences.
