The Election Hub Questionnaire

Please provide demographic information about yourself to help voters (age, education, current occupation, where you live).

I am 34 years old. I got my Bachelor's degree in agriculture education at NC State and received my Master's in Education at Xavier University. I taught for nearly 6 years in CMS and left when I had my daughter. I have spent the last 3 years raising her at home to provide a strong foundation of secure attachment and evidence-based early childhood development. I live right about where I-485 meets Albemarle Road so I am well-positioned within the District 4 region to know what residents on the east side need.

Why are you running for this role and why should voters pick you?  Please share any experience in an elected role that would be relevant to voters.

As a former middle and high school teacher, and now an avid early childhood development enthusiast, I have studied what kids need from many angles. I know the many joys and some serious problems that exist within the school systems. I have seen what works and what doesn't, and I have studied the student-outcomes-focused governance book that CMS uses as its new school board framework. I have the education, experience, and drive to create safer, higher-quality schools for all of CMS and to open lines of transparent communication so that the community is being heard and valued and is aware of the decisions made in CMS and understands the "why" behind every decision.

What is one thing you would like to accomplish in the first six months if elected?

I'd like to create and pass policy that would only allow school personnel, background-checked volunteers, and parents/guardians (or those stated in writing by parents/guardians) to be on campuses during the school day. No others, ICE agents included, are permitted to be near our students.

Tell us about 2-3 professional accomplishments you have achieved in your work experience (not limited to public service) that give voters a sense of your leadership style or skills.

My professional accomplishments do not come from awards or accolades. They come from the students I served. My greatest accomplishments are receiving these statements from my students over the years:

"It's weird--you're like strict, but also super nice." --Vaughn

"I loved going to her [Ms. Jillian's] class because I knew I was always going to feel welcomed, challenged and encouraged. Somehow we were always both learning and having fun simultaneously." --Jamilah

"Speaking from personal experience you fostered an environment that allowed each individual to have their place individually and collectively. For myself it was that sense of belonging. There were plenty of times during High School when I would doubt my sense of self, and through your presence I would not be the person I am today. Not to mention how you were a safe haven for most students at that school, we even raised baby quail! Like where else could you receive such a diverse set of life skills! All Jokes aside, you were a major positive impact in my life Ms. P. Still have the letter you wrote me for graduation on my cork board at work." --Nick

So, you see, my greatest accomplishments are making kids feel loved and accepted and leading with a firm, but kind manner.

What endorsements from any notable NC organizations or individuals have you received?

EducateUS and Democratic Municipal Officials are the 2 I have received so far.

Tell us something unexpected about you that voters may be interested to know.

I used to compete in ballroom dance competitions in college and hope to again someday!
