He says that his professional background in spend management is something that he thinks he can help Cornelius with. He says he is “running for balance” and to provide a progressive voice, as he is the only Democrat running against a slate of Republican candidates. He says he supports the proposed sales tax referendum for transportation “wholeheartedly,” particularly the prospect of commuter rail.

DeVoney (pronounced de-VOH-nee) has a bachelor’s from Emory and an MBA from the University of Houston. His father was in the military, and DeVoney was born overseas. He, his wife and daughter have lived in Cornelius since 2018. He is a registered Democrat, chair of the Democrats of North Mecklenburg and endorsed by MeckDems.
